Roaming the Renaissance

Music from the 18th century: today music for Easter

The main work today is a Mass from Orazio Vecchi (1550-1605), who was born in Modena.

Though he was ordained as a priest, he is mostly known for his secular music, especially his madrigal comedy L’Amfiparnaso. His religious oeuvre has been almost entirely forgotten. Part of this oeuvre are the four Masses that were only printed after his death. One of these is the Missa in Resurrectione Domini. The regular songs are alternated with songs for Easter, which Vecchi added to this Mass.

In addition, we’ll listen to five motets from his contemporaries: Tomás Luis de Victoria, Giovanni Pierluiga da Palestrina and Giovanni Animuccia.
