Music by 20th-century composers.
The guitar in the last century [39] – In the last episode of this monthly series, we will hear guitar pieces from the African continent.
At the end of the last century, an encounter between classical guitarist John Williams and Cameroonian musician Francis Bebey led to a special collaboration. Bebey adapted a few of his pieces for Williams and jazz guitarist John Etheridge. He also composed a new piece especially for the duo: Endome. John Williams composed two new pieces, based on folk songs from Senegal and Zimbabwe.
Another special encounter between a classical guitarist and an African musician is the one between guitarist Derek Gripper and Toumani Diabaté from Mali. Diabaté plays the kora, a 21-string harp. Gripper adapted a few of his pieces for classical guitar.
