Live recordings (World Music). Episode: Bamba Wassoulou Groove (Mali); Afrikafestival Hertme 2024
In this broadcast, the recording of the Malian group Bamba Wassoulou Groove, which again – just as in 2016 – gave a smashing performance at the renowned Africa festival in Hertme, Overijssel, on 6 July 2024.
Bamba Wassoulou Groove was originally founded as a tribute to the musical legacy of Malian guitar legend Zani Diabaté, who passed awat in 2010. The performances (including in the Melkweg in Amsterdam) from this legendary guitarist with his Super Djata Band were an instant hit in the 1980s with their heady sound firmly rooted in the traditional Wassoulou hunter style.
Percussionist Bamba Dembelé was part of the Super Djata Band, before he joined the legendary Super Rail Band. In 2013, he co-founded Bamba Wassoulou Groove together with guitarist Moussa Diabaté and drummer Maguett Diop, both also musicians from Super Rail – two years after the death of Zani Diabaté. By completing the line-up with a new generation of players, they succeeded in making a name for themselves quickly. The group recorded two albums and went in international tours before Dembele passed away in 2018. Luckily, the group then continued under the leadership of star guitarist Moussa Diabaté to successfully keep the Zani-inspired sound alive.
