Theme, Wednesday 13 August, 20:00 CET.
How does the music of Dufay and De Machault resonate in contemporary music? These grand masters of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, with their innovations in polyphony and harmony, were important in the development of Renaissance music. And their influence is still audible today.
In this Theme broadcast, we hear, among other pieces, Being Dufay by Ambrose Field, in which Guillaume Dufay’s music is immersed in modern electronic soundscapes. The medieval hoquetus technique also appears in works by Louis Andriessen (De Staat), Harrison Birtwistle (Hoquetus Irvinus) and Heinz Holliger (Triple Hoquet, Complainte und Epilog).
The programme concludes “at the source” with Guillaume de Machault’s own Hoquetus David, performed by The Hilliard Ensemble.
