The American musician Frederic Rzewski (1938–2021, pictured) was not only a leading composer but also an outstanding piano virtuoso. His best-known work is the piano cycle The People United Will Never Be Defeated, yet his true magnum opus is The Road — a nine-hour, 64-part composition on which he worked from 1995 to 2001. In this monumental piece, a remarkable variety of musical styles passes by, ranging from strict structural writing to free improvisation.
