Spleen: Massenet, Debussy, Fauré and their succeessors in French song of the Belle Époque
Today’s edition of Between Dreams and Reality features soprano Adèle Charvet and pianist Florian Caroubi performing French songs from the early twentieth century.
In the accompanying CD booklet, the artists highlight the close relationship between French art song, its composers and the great French poets. As Charles Koechlin, one of the composers heard in today’s programme, observes, French song tends to have a more aristocratic character than German song, which is more strongly influenced by folk music.
