Episode 293 features Jacqueline du Pré in Cello Concertos by Camille Saint-Saëns and Edward Elgar
Sometimes the piano takes a back seat in Madge-point, and the programme takes a detour into other musical territory, exploring recordings that have achieved legendary status. This time, we turn to the extraordinary cellist Jacqueline du Pré, whose career was tragically cut short.
Starting off with Camille Saint-Saëns’s First Cello Concerto, featuring du Pré with her husband Daniel Barenboim conducting the New Philharmonia Orchestra. The programme continues with her celebrated interpretation of Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, recorded live in 1965 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir John Barbirolli.
