In this episode, a recording from the Afrika Festival Hertme 2024, where the Cape Verdean diva Nancy Vieira performed on 6 July 2024.
With the clear, cool timbre of her voice, this singer brings a refreshing touch to Cape Verde’s classic morna style. She was born in Guinee-Bissau, and raised in Cape Verde, in the capital Praia, and then moved to Portugal. There, her father – a former musician who once performed with Cesária Évora, and had given up his career to become active in the battle for independence – became ambassador of Cape Verde. With her album Lus from 2007, she made her international breakthrough.
In 2014, she already gave an impressive performance at the Afrika Festival in Hertme. In 2024, she did it again while she played many songs of her then to be released album Gente. On it, she is inspired by a mix of funana and samba, also called funamba.
