Classical music from South India: more melodious, but equally dignified.

In Amsterdam, as an annex to the Tropenmuseum, you used to have the Tropentheater. Concerts were regularly held here with all kinds of world music. Especially gamelan and Indian classical music were often heard.

Today, we will hear a concert from 1997 with Carnatic music, a tradition from South India. A region with a very different culture from North India: a different language family, a different history, a different attitude to life. And therefore slightly different music. One key difference from the north is that Carnatic music is usually sung. Is the performance actually instrumental, like it is in this concert, then they often opt for a lilting solo instrument. In this concert they opted for the bamboo flute: an agile instrument on which you can perfectly imitate the subtle inflections of the human voice.

The concert has two parts. In the first part, we will hear three compositions. The main part of this concert will be the raga Hamsadhwani. This is a simple raga for late nights. In the second part, the atmosphere will loosen up a bit: the ragas last a lot shorter and are also interspersed with folk-song-like pieces.
