Episode: Cheikh Lô (Senegal), Afrika Festival Hertme 2026
Recorded on 5 July at the renowned Afrika Festival Hertme 2026, this programme presents a performance by Senegalese music icon Cheikh Lô. A singer, percussionist and composer, he has played a major role in Senegalese music, developing a distinctive sound that brings together mbalax, rumba, Afro-Cuban rhythms and soul.Hertme has welcomed Cheikh Lô before: he appeared at the festival in 2006. Nearly two decades later, in 2025, he released Maame, his first studio album in ten years. Both personal and deeply spiritual, the album revisits his musical roots while reflecting on the rich heritage of African music. Festival programmer Rob Lokin sets the scene with an introduction to the artist and the influences behind his music.
