Tribute to the Egyptian singer Om Kalsoum, produced by Cobie Ivens

Om Kalsoum’s status in the Arab world remains unparalleled. The singer was born in northern Egypt, possibly in 1904. Her father was an imam and taught his daughter to recite the Quran at a young age. Her unique voice was thus noticed from a young age. From the 1920s and 1930s onward, her reputation grew, thanks in part to the songs written by her regular lyricist, Ahmed Rami.
Om Kalsoum was famous for her long performances, which cemented her star status. When she died in 1975, she received a state funeral attended by no fewer than four million mourning Egyptians.
