Icons like The Beatles, The Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, and Neil Young have all named The Everly Brothers’ close harmony singing as one of the key inspirations at the start of their musical careers. The brothers had their first big hit in the late ’50s. Naturally, they brought along the music they grew up with — sounds that shaped their own unique style. That’s why we’ll be listening to examples of that music. We’ll also hear music inspired by The Everly Brothers themselves, and of course, their own songs will be featured too. The focus this hour is on vocals, and a bit of guitar. During The Rolling Stones’ first major tour — opening for The Everly Brothers, Bo Diddley, and Little Richard — Keith Richards was deeply impressed by Don Everly’s guitar playing. In his autobiography (Life, 2010), he even calls him one of the best rhythm guitarists around.
