Karl Amadeus Hartmann  ( 1905-1963)

He composed eight symphonies, an anti-nazi opera and a handful of other work. And yet the German composer Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s fame does not flourish. Why is that? Is it the fact that his generation of composers had to compete with composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez after the war? Or is it because of his music. It is actually quite sad and very confronting. The horror of World War II are always present in his music. But what a great composer! Listen to two amazing examples in this episode of the Last Century.
