Mambo presents the final part of the three-part series on the Latino bandleader and percussionist Mongo Santamaría.
He was a much-loved percussionist in the jazz world. He was also the musician who gave rhythm ’n blues a Latino connection. It was said of him that he was the “latiniser” of North American music. He was able to make the crossover into the non-Latino music world.
At the same time, Mongo became annoyed by what he saw as a decline in the quality of Latino music, which was commercially labelled “salsa”. In the salsa world, everyone was striving to create a larger market. Despite this, it was Mongo who was invited to perform in the most important cities of the United States.
