The music of Tanburi Cemil Bey

This episode of Orient Express is dedicated to one of the most distinguished Turkish composers of the late Ottoman period: Tanburi Cemil Bey (Istanbul, 1873–1916).
In Arab countries, his name is often rendered as Jamil Bey. The nickname Tanburi means ‘tanbur player’; he was a master of the tanbur as well as of other Ottoman instruments, such as the kemençe.

His Ottoman instrumental compositions — together with those of the Armenian  “Kemani” Tatyos Efendi — form an indispensable part of the repertoire of classical Maqam music in Turkey, the east Mediterranean , and the Arab world.

We will listen to several performances of some of his compositions by both Turkish and Arab ensembles. You can find more information and more of this music here
