Mambo presents the second and final episode in its series on New York City’s Orquesta Novel.
At some point, the orchestra dropped ‘Típica’ from its name and added brass instruments to the lineup. This helped attract growing attention to the group, which made a name for itself with charanga music in the late 1970s.

In 1981, the orchestra played with trombonist Jimmy Bosch, who is also familiar to Dutch audiences. By this time, Orquesta Novel’s records were being produced by Eddie Drennon, the band’s violinist. The group also paid tribute to New York City in a track we hear today at number six.
The orchestra also wanted to attract a broader audience, particularly in Europe, so they experimented with familiar hits and English-language lyrics, recording their own versions of popular songs by Stevie Wonder and the Beatles. Both feature in today’s programme.
